Today is International Dark ‘n Stormy Day. To celebrate, Goslings Rum, the brand behind the original two-ingredient cocktail, announced plans to expand the drink’s brand into the digital media space, including virtual drinks and products in the metaverse. and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Constructed from Goslings Ginger Beer and Goslings Black Seal Rum (garnished with a slice of lime), Dark ‘n Stormy is the national drink of the island of Bermuda. While its origins date back to the 1920s – when Royal Bermuda Navy officers are said to have brewed their own ginger beer and added a splash of dark rum to accidentally create an iconic cocktail – the Dark ‘n Stormy n’ was not a registered trademark until 1980. The original trademark protects the integrity of the cocktail and symbolizes that the drink is not an authentic Dark ‘n Stormy unless it uses Goslings Black Seal rum. The new brand will extend this protection to goods and services in the digital world.

“It’s very exciting to see the Dark ‘n Stormy cocktail and the Goslings brand take the first (digital) step into the future,” Malcolm Gosling Jr., eighth generation rum maker at Goslings Rum, told Forbes. , adding that it is a brand priority to introduce Bermuda’s national cocktail to the world, which in today’s modern sphere now includes the digital world.

Although the Dark ‘n Stormy brand is currently registered for real-world beverages in more than 20 countries around the world, Gosling shared that this new brand is pending before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. (USPTO). While awaiting approval, Gosling explained that the rum brand will spend the next year developing its campaigns around the digital brand.

“The app also envisions the use of the Dark ‘n Stormy brand for entertainment, events, and customer loyalty programs in the metaverse and virtual worlds,” Gosling explained, adding that “nothing is out of of question” when it comes to a potentially all-inclusive digital branding, including domain name system (DNS) RTD packaging – although he “couldn’t confirm that yet”.

The planned launch date for the official digital brand is set for June 9, 2023, once again in line with International Dark ‘n Stormy Day. The date is significant because Goslings coined the cocktail holiday in June 2019 before officially commemorating the day in June 2020 with NationalToday.com; continue to rely on the momentum of the drink. “We want to make sure we’re at the forefront of all expansion opportunities for generations to come,” Gosling said.

Goslings joins a growing list of spirits brands moving into the virtual beverage space and embracing NFTs, which have multiplied rapidly since BlockBar, the first direct-to-consumer NFT platform for wine and spirits, launched in October 2021 and provided a platform not only to buy and trade, but also to offer. The virtual playground has been established and it’s a sign of the times to get involved.
