England suffered their first loss to Hungary in six decades by 1-0 in the Nations League on Saturday.

Dominik Szoboszlai converted a second-half penalty after being fouled by Reece James.

The last time Hungary beat England was in the 1962 World Cup, with England having gone 15 matches unbeaten against Hungary since then.

Excluding penalties, it was England’s first defeat in 23 matches.

“We have to accept that we didn’t do enough to win the game. A draw would have been the fair result,” England manager Gareth Southgate said. “We didn’t create too many clean chances.

“The heat was a factor and took a lot of the players off and we tried to refresh the squad earlier than usual. The balance between discovering new things and being consistent with the regular squad, I have to see if I understood that right.”

Hungary had already shown their potential by drawing against world champions France and Germany in the European Championship last year. But Marco Rossi’s team did not qualify for the World Cup.

“We have evolved a lot in terms of playing in possession of the ball,” said Hungary captain Ádám Szalai. “In the first half, we kept the ball well. In the second, we dominated until the goal, which is incredible. We proved at Euro 2020 what we were capable of facing the best, and we have shown it again.”

Also in the same group, Italy and Germany drew 1-1 with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Joshua Kimmich trading goals three minutes apart in the second half in Bologna.

Pellegrini redirected a cross from Italian debutant Wilfried Gnonto before Kimmich fired a rebound.

European champions Italy, who failed to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup, made big changes after a 3-0 loss to Argentina in the Finalissima on Wednesday.

“We played level against a great national team,” said Italian coach Roberto Mancini. “Germany are one of the strongest teams at the moment.”

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma appeared to injure his left wrist on the final game of the game.

The game in Hungary was ruined when schoolchildren mocked the England players by taking the knee in their anti-racism gesture before kick-off. The match was due to be played in an empty stadium due to the attacking behavior of the fans during Euro 2020, but the school children were allowed into the Puskas Arena instead.

“I have no idea why people would choose to boo that gesture and very often young people can’t figure out why they’re doing it, so they’re influenced by older adults,” Southgate said. “Everyone knows what we believe and what we stand for.

“I still hear that in our stadiums as well. That’s why we do it and keep taking that position and we will keep doing it as a team.

England’s home game against Italy next weekend will also be played behind closed doors, at Molinuex, due to the behavior of its fans during the Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy. a year ago.

The four group winners from League A will advance to the final four in June next year, while the fourth-placed teams will advance to League B. The group winners from the lower leagues will be promoted.
