Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force (STF) on Friday arrested a man for allegedly posing as an IPS officer and cheating on a top town jeweler.

Defendant Rajiv Singh had duped Nitesh Rastogi, owner of Mohan Shyam Kalyan Das Jewelers in the capital’s Gol market district, the STF said in a statement.

Singh was arrested in the area of ​​Aliganj police station in Lucknow after being told he was planning to escape to Mumbai, the statement said.

Singh, posing as an IPS officer of a Maharashtra cadre, had befriended Rastogi.

During questioning, Singh said that in July last year he bought gold jewelry worth Rs 67 lakh and then again in December worth Rs 1.95 crore to Rastogi, he said.

He handed over post-dated checks of seven different amounts from the Central Bank of India, but insisted that they should not be put into payment under one guise or another until they expire, said the STF.

When the jeweler demanded his money, he threatened him and refused to pay or return the jewelry, the STF said.

A case against him under the relevant sections relating to forgery and falsification of documents has been registered at the Mahanagar police station, the STF said.

Gold jewelry weighing 5.7 kg, Rs 2,500 in cash, two cell phones and a fake ID card from DCP, Crime Branch, Mumbai Police were recovered in his possession, he said.
